Chapter Eleven

Curtis’s lawyer had been talking a solid twenty minutes two days later, and the judge appeared ready to fling his gavel into his mouth to shut him up. The guy’s total presentation had been about Max’s health and how the paperwork he’d put in place couldn’t be trusted no matter what the doctors had written. He’d been erratic at work for months, and there was no way he had the wherewithal to plan anything that could be trusted now since he was already mentally impaired.

Fallon hadn’t planned on coming, but Eliza had filled her in after hearing from Monroe. The way Curtis had planned out his war against Brooks and the rest of the family had left her shaken that he’d go to these lengths to get his way. Someone like that wouldn’t be great at the compromise it took to make a relationship work. Their engagement wasn’t real, but had it been, she’d have walked up to the front of the courtroom and handed his ring back.

“Are you done?” the judge asked when the lawyer took a breath. “Let’s go with yes for now and give the other side a chance to repeat themselves over and over again.”

“Your Honor,” Dan said and concisely laid out their argument. “We ask for a continuance so the medical professionals can testify. Max Boseman realized something like this could happen, so he prepared extensively. He’s not denying that he has Alzheimer’s, but all this was done before the progression of the disease. You can see that by the medical experts who questioned him extensively.”

“Ms. Boseman?” The judge seemed to be talking to Brooks.

Fallon hadn’t had a great view of Brooks from where she was sitting, so the sight of those broad shoulders made her hold her breath for a moment. Monroe glanced her way when she exhaled in a whoosh. She was used to relaxed Brooks, but the person she knew had been polished into this businesswoman who appeared unflappable in a great suit.

“Yes, sir.” Brooks didn’t glance Curtis’s way and stared at the judge.

“Explain to me your part in this even though I can read.”

“The easiest way of putting it, Your Honor, is my parents ran a successful business for years. That changed with my father’s stroke. He had to step back, and my mother, who was also involved in the day-to-day operations, took time off to care for him. In their absence the business lost some important clients due to negligence.”

Curtis jumped to his feet and pointed at Brooks. “That’s bullshit and you know it.”

“Sir,” the judge said after banging his gavel for a solid minute, “either control your client, or I’ll have him thrown out. If he insists on staying, I’ll have him gagged. If you want to test me on that, try me.”

Curtis’s attorney pushed him back into his seat and whispered something in his ear. “Our apologies, Your Honor. It won’t happen again.”

“Ms. Boseman, please continue,” the judge said.

“Once our father realized the position the company was
